Dr. John Hammond, Founder and CEO of Injen, invites four people to his soon to be opened new amusement park. The board wants final clearance, so Hammond brings in two palentologists from an active dig site, and a third, less “dinosaur-y” pick: a mathematician.
That character is Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, in 1993’s Jurassic Park. The good doctor now famously declares with ominous conviction: “Life, uh, finds a way.”
He understands that nature is beautiful and bold and crushingly reliable in its ability to adapt and grow no matter the circumstances.
Malcolm knows that regardless of the stops the park’s owner, John Hammond, is willing to put in place to ensure total control over the park and the guest experience, nature will still “find a way”.
Shortly after this exchange over dinner, our main cast moves into the park, and the rest is movie history.
(Apt I know that a Spielberg movie would remind me of this group, but go with me on this one.)
Today, we hear too often about division, and how different people are. What makes me really appreciate this movie club are the times we spend talking and laughing together.
Even in postponing the last May meeting, I heard from several people expressing their disappointment but excitement for the new date. Multiple people took the free night to go see a movie together.
Looking back on the first five months of this group, our best moments have come when we have discussed communally our most treasured deep cuts, lauded over our childhood favorites, and victoriously took home VHS copies of Meet the Parents.
As we enter the summer, I would love to have ideas from anyone that has one. Please reach out If you have a fun game to play, a theme for a draft, or anything else. This group is and always will be a collective.
