After one full week into the Fall Movie Season, and we are starting to have a few questions answered:
- Studios are clearly stepping at least a week back from the Dune: Part 3/Avengers: Doomsday double feature (currently referred to as “Dunesday”). This is leaving a bit of a hole in the calendar at the end of the year.
- The buzz out of Venice and Telluride is strong for Primetime, You Can See Everything, and The Debut. Expect multiple Academy Awards from this trio.
- Out of the top 26 most anticipated titles, only one is a piece of a comic book universe. Encouraging that after a strong year for original, independent, or unique titles we are getting more of the same to close out.
This week we had a steady change in the rankings. 12 of the 14 titles had some sort of change, with 2 titles new to the list. Word of mouth and distance from the release are settling expectations as well.
The strongest of that buzz carries Wild Horse Nine to the top of the week 2 rankings. Look for this Martin McDonagh directed feature to be a consistent piece of awards season conversation.
McDonagh’s roster of films includes The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges, and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri.
Primetime is this week’s biggest mover, jumping up from 11th spot to 5th place. Robert Pattinson is receiving broad, perhaps overzealous, commentary for his performance. The R-Pats led vehicle from A24 is all there on paper-will it follow through on the anticipation?
September and October we start to see the first of festival releases and director driven titles be scheduled (see Primetime, The Debut, and Digger). Dune: Part 3 and Doomsday are coming, but plenty to see first that scratches bigger itches.
